Executive Director

Dean R. Argo

Political Background

Dean Argo began his political career in 1982 as a broadcast journalist, assigned to cover state government for WCOV-TV, the CBS affiliate in Montgomery.  In 1984, Mr. Argo accepted an anchor/reporter position at WSFA-TV, the NBC affiliate in Montgomery.  His duties quickly grew to include covering state and local government, as well as the state board of education.  In 1988, Governor Guy Hunt appointed Mr. Argo to the position of director of communications at the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.  He also acted as the governor’s liaison between ADECA and the Alabama Development Office.

State Superintendent of Education Dr. Wayne Teague offered Mr. Argo a position as director of the Information and Communications division at the Alabama State Department of Education.  His duties included following education-related legislation, consulting with the governor’s education advisor, and acting as a spokesman for Dr. Teague and the State Department of Education.

In 1996, Mr. Argo was elected to the Prattville City Council.  After being re-elected in 2000, Mr. Argo was elected council president by his fellow council members.  In 2004, Mr. Argo was re-elected to a third term and to his second consecutive term as council president.

Association Experience

In February 1996, Mr. Argo became director of public relations for the Alabama Education Association.  His duties included serving as a member of the powerful legislative lobbying team.  Mr. Argo followed and pushed AEA-backed legislation, as well as helped defeat harmful legislation.

In 2005, Mr. Argo accepted the position of director of communications for the Alabama Municipal Electric Authority, which generates and provides power to 11 cities that own and operate their own electric utility.

In January 2007, Mr. Argo became only the second executive director in the history of the Electric Cities of Alabama (ECA), the statewide association for all 36 municipally-owned electric utilities.  ECA’s membership currently serves more than one million customers throughout the state.  Mr. Argo’s responsibilities include state and federal governmental affairs as well as the development of other association services.

Additionally, Mr. Argo serves as director of the Alabama Public Utilities Alliance, a state legislative monitoring service for Alabama’s public utilities.
