Dean R. Argo
Political Background
Dean Argo began
his political career in 1982 as a broadcast journalist, assigned
to cover state government for WCOV-TV, the CBS affiliate in
Montgomery. In 1984, Mr. Argo accepted an anchor/reporter
position at WSFA-TV, the NBC affiliate in Montgomery. His duties
quickly grew to include covering state and local government, as
well as the state board of education. In 1988, Governor Guy Hunt
appointed Mr. Argo to the position of director of communications
at the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. He
also acted as the governor’s liaison between ADECA and the
Alabama Development Office.
State
Superintendent of Education Dr. Wayne Teague offered Mr. Argo a
position as director of the Information and Communications
division at the Alabama State Department of Education. His
duties included following education-related legislation,
consulting with the governor’s education advisor, and acting as a
spokesman for Dr. Teague and the State Department of Education.
In 1996, Mr.
Argo was elected to the Prattville City Council. After being
re-elected in 2000, Mr. Argo was elected council president by his
fellow council members. In 2004, Mr. Argo was re-elected to a
third term and to his second consecutive term as council
president.
Association Experience
In February
1996, Mr. Argo became director of public relations for the
Alabama Education Association. His duties included serving as a
member of the powerful legislative lobbying team. Mr. Argo
followed and pushed AEA-backed legislation, as well as helped
defeat harmful legislation.
In 2005, Mr.
Argo accepted the position of director of communications for the
Alabama Municipal Electric Authority, which generates and
provides power to 11 cities that own and operate their own
electric utility.
In January 2007,
Mr. Argo became only the second executive director in the history
of the Electric Cities of Alabama (ECA), the statewide
association for all 36 municipally-owned electric utilities.
ECA’s membership currently serves more than one million customers
throughout the state. Mr. Argo’s responsibilities include state
and federal governmental affairs as well as the development of
other association services.
Additionally,
Mr. Argo serves as director of the Alabama Public Utilities
Alliance, a state legislative monitoring service for Alabama’s
public utilities.
